Air monitoring is a process conducted by a licensed asbestos assessor, where air sampling units are set up in and around an asbestos work area or site. The purpose of these units is to pick up any airborne dust and particles by drawing air through a filter on a high flow rate. Once the air monitoring process is completed, the filters from the units are prepared and processed for further testing.

When is air monitoring required?
There are rules and legislations in place which make the process of air monitoring compulsory in specific circumstances. Air monitoring must take place during the removal of asbestos in areas over 10 square meters and is also mandatory when any friable asbestos is detected.
After air monitoring is completed on site, the licensed assessor will conduct a clearance inspection to ensure there is no asbestos debris left around the work site. For these specific air monitoring projects, it is also essential for the licenced assessor to provide a clearance certificate.
